RACER PRADO CAR |
A COUPLE of weekends ago I was reunited with the Prado, Toyota's medium sized four-wheel-drive wagon.
It is regarded as the best in this category but is also fighting against the popular Mitsubishi Pajero among others.
Up this way and in the Outback Toyota is number one in off-roading which makes the Prado a sensible alternative to big daddy LandCruiser.
The problem with the Cruiser is that it is not cheap. The 200 Series wagon starts at $70,735 for a V8 petrol and climbs all the way to $107,809 for the bells and whistles Sahara V8 Turbodiesel. There are no other engines except the V8.
You can look at the no-nonsense 70 Series Troopie (from $60,990) and the wagon (from $54,990), but these are work horses and not much fun to manoeuvre around town. That leaves the Prado which starts at under $50K for the base model 3.0-litre diesel STD ($45,100) with various other V6 petrol and 3.0-litre turbodiesels units climbing to $78,087 for the diesel Grande.
